Default Google Map - My location not available

Recently, when I try to display my location using the Google Map app, I get a message its not available at this time (that is using the GPS location. If I also turn on the Wireless network location, I get my location at the nearest wireless tower. Any suggestions how to make GPS more reliable. The signal strenghts are all very strong.
